It seems that Hollywood, after using comic books as a fountain of inspiration for a few years, now turn to the fairy world, to get new ideas, with the first ones both being based on the works of the Brothers Grimm.
First up is Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke’s take on Little Red Riding Hood, with acclaimed actors like Amanda Seyfried, Gary Oldman and Max Irons, which has its premiere on March 2. A year after that, the Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola, will give us his Grimm adaptation – Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.
In Wirkola’s version, the story is set 15 years after Hansel and Gretel’s famous and horrific encounter with the cannibalistic witch, in her tasty house, in the woods, and the siblings are now determined bounty hunters that are targeting not surprisingly witches.
The buzz around the movie says that we can expect an unique storyline that will be dark and gritty, with a mix of blood, action, humor, suspense and a bit of romance in it, as well.
In the cast we find Gemma Arterton (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Clash of the Titans) and Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker, 28 Weeks Later) as the famous siblings, with Monique Ganderton (X-Men: The Last Stand, Watchmen) doing the role of the Candy Witch.
Recently it was also announced that the Swedish actor Peter Stormare (Fargo, The Big Lebowski) will undertake the part of Berringer, as shady lawman in the town, where Hansel and Gretel are chasing after a witch. I think that the role will fit Stormare’s acting style perfectly and genuinely looking forward to see him in this one.
Personally, I think the movie sounds intriguing and hopefully it’ll be a blast to watch, when the siblings storms into the theaters next year. Now, what other fairy tale would you like to see up there, on the big screen?
